The Luxury Tax on the hotels in Delhi has been increased from 10% to 15% on published room tariff with effect from 01st August, 2015. This will put more burdens on the Indian Hospitality sector which was already one of the highest taxed sectors. The impact of this can be understood from this example: Let’s assume that the published tariff of a particular hotel is Rs. 30,000 whereas the contracted rate is Rs. 15,000 (Contracted rate is the actual rate on which the room is sold). The Luxury tax will be applied on much higher Published tariff which in this case amounts to Rs. 4,500. In addition to this, service tax @ 8.4% is applicable on the contracted rates (Rs. 1260). So, the total tax to be paid is Rs. 5760 (4500 + 1260) which is approximately 40% of the actual room rate.
